The  letter clusters  “ e + r / i + r” may have the speech sound.

Say “er” if the land is fertile. 

Say “er” if you are a good person.

Say “ir” if you have a pet bird.

Say “ir” if you are firm. 

Say “ir” if you got the third prize in the competition.

Say “ir” and “er” if you stir the coffee before you serve it.
